Person wants to start a new business, makes silly mistakes and loses the business. Person starts again, makes fewer mistakes but the business still doesn’t survive. Person finally learns from their mistakes and enjoys a thriving business.
Who here with their own business hasn’t experienced that loss and learning? That’s the story in this book.
I found this book to be very informative and a breath of fresh air. The writing is concise, practical, and funny. It’s also very believable. Gone are the flowcharts promising a 24.5 percent return on your investment. Gone are the get rich quick promises. What’s left in it’s place is a solid guide to starting AND keeping your own business.
Parts of the book may be obvious to some people. The author presses the need to become familiar with the internet. That may be obvious to you and I but our friend who makes jewelery may never think about that. We know blurry photocopied fliers taped to the laundrymat cork board isn’t as professional as business cards but there’s still people who do that. There’s tips on collecting money from clients, keeping good records, why personal hygenie is a must (hard to believe people will show up to a job interview dirty and smelling of cigarette smoke), and why you should be nice to your competition.
I really enjoy this author’s book because I believe he’s done his time in the business trenches. I’ve had several businesses myself and the experiences mentioned with the author or the author’s friends are mirrored with mine. I charged too less, I thought of advertising as an expense and cut back (forgetting that without it, I wouldn’t have customers), didn’t keep my records as neat as I should have and a few other mistakes that are too embarrassing to mention now. This book will help you avoid those mistakes.
PROS
Easy to follow and understand advice.
Lack of corporate speak.
Real world advice.
Good writing samples to use.
Very funny writing.
CONS
None really. I would have liked more information on Internet marketing only because I felt the author is knowledgeable in it. However Internet marketing changes so rapidly, any information could be obsolete quickly. What the author mentions is more than some books mention so it would be unfair to chastise him. I suspect he left the ones he know would be around for a while and that’s still very good. I figure I have to put at least One Con for balance so there it is.
I’m very happy with this book. I plan on buying a few copies and giving them to my business owner friends as gifts.

I’ve read quite a few home-based business books, and this one is the most helpful I’ve come across for many reasons. First, it’s easy to read. Short, concise paragraphs… not pages upon pages reiterating the same information in different ways (I don’t have time for that)! It also goes into helpful topics you don’t usually find in a business how-to book, like why it’s important to keep your car clean (I’m not kidding! Read it and you’ll see). The books author Dan Furman does a surprisingly wonderful thing in this book – he makes you laugh! I couldn’t put the book down, simply because it was so entertaining. I’ve never actually enjoyed reading a “business” book before. I wish all informational books could be written this way. You can also pick it up and thumb through it with ease, finding useful information at any point. I highly recommend this book!

I highly recommend this book to anyone starting a business. It is filled with many helpful tips, ones that point out what you should be doing, and others that point out what you shouldn’t.
This book gives me the knowledge and positive attitude to get through the first few difficult months. To be honest, I kept knocking on the wrong doors until I found this book. I felt like Christopher Columbus without a map. I wasn’t sure what to do, who to trust, and what was really important and what wasn’t, what to spend money on, the value of bartering, the importance to advertise, and how to structure my day so I don’t work too much or too little. Working from home is very different than working in an office. The book has helped me set attainable goals, set priorities, and what is important to do right now.
Dan Furman’s book is a gift to anyone starting a new business. The book is direct, to the point, and funny. It covers a multitude of subjects and I take it with me wherever I go. I jot down ideas during the day and Start & Run has everything I need to know. A new business is like having a baby. It takes the same care, time and attention that a newborn needs. I found starting my business was like having my first child. I didn’t have a clue what to do first. There were so many first-time, important decisions to be made and I kept looking for a mentor. Well, I found one here.

Review by Another Bookworm for Start & Run a Real Home-Based Business
Rating:
Relevant and specific information from someone who has succeeded (and failed!) at home based businesses. Covers practical aspects of setting up a business, including not only the basics (zoning and licenses) but also advice on dealing with problem customers, how to take credit cards, e-commerce, and offering guarantees. Would have been 5-star except for one little flaw: He tells the reader not to write a business plan — then goes on to discuss the business model, the market, the product, financing, etc. — all the relevant points of a business plan. He may not have MADE a business plan, but it’s clear he follows one successfully.

101 Businesses You Can Start With Less Than One Thousand Dollars: For Stay-at-Home Moms & Dads by Heather Shepard is a great resource for anyone that is thinking about starting an at home business. The benefits of an at home business are growing larger every day and this book shows how one can make a success out of working at home.
The way Ms. Shepard organizes the book makes it very easy to follow and utilize. She takes the reader systematically through the processes of selecting a business, setting up a home office, making a business plan, finance options and advertising. I found the chapter on self-evaluation to be a valuable tool. In this chapter, Ms. Shepard has the reader ask themselves the hard questions to determine if they are truly ready to start their own business and to find out what direction would be the best to take. This aspect of the book shows that it is not a scheme to become a millionaire overnight. Instead, this publication is a serious guidebook shows the reader their strengths and weaknesses. In turn, the book provides the reader with resources to strengthen their skills if they need to.
I feel that this book is not just a guide to starting a business, but also one that is a reference in order to keep a home based business on track. Finally there is a book that gives the aspiring entrepreneur helpful and practical advice in plain straightforward language.

While the title indicates it was written for stay-at-home moms and dads, almost everyone can benefit from this book. Heather Shepherd designed a book for individuals who wish to supplement their income, while caring for small children and working from a home office. Shepherd spends considerable time focused on the self-evaluation aspect of starting a business. Here, she presents self-evaluation guides, checklists and advice if your skills are weak.
Shepherd supplies charts and questions to ensure individuals choose the correct home-based business. The actual business suggestions are divided into two categories based on start-up costs: $0-$100 and $500-$1,000. Within each business idea, Shepherd provides a brief overview of the business, projected money needed to start the business, business equipment needed, education/skills required, where to find clientele and a starting point. She also offers a “learn more” section for each business. In this section, she gives the reader websites, books organizations and groups that may be helpful when starting this business.
Readers are presented with a complete look at a sample business plan and a step-by-step guide to writing their own. Shepherd provides readers with several case studies of successful individuals who have started and maintained their own home-based businesses. The information supplied in this book can serve anyone wishing to start their own business as a useful reference guide.
Review by Fred Renner for 101 Businesses You Can Start With Less Than One Thousand Dollars: For Stay-at-Home Moms & Dads
Rating:
I was quite disappointed in this book. While it does have 101 business ideas and other basic information, I feel cheated. Technology is moving faster than publishing and with a 2007 copyright the book is dated lacking many current opportunities. One specific complaint involves the number of jobs that require you to work outside your home. This isn’t always possible with small children. There is nothing new contained within the pages of this book, just a rehash of the same old jobs. Child care, medical billing, various consulting jobs and similar jobs dominate this book. Can you really make money arranging flowers or baking cakes? Perhaps, but it won’t pay your house payment.

I liked this book quite a bit because it gave a lot of great information and was true to its title; there really were 101 business listed within the book that are suitable for people who want their own business while raising small children. I think this is a great book for someone who knows that they want to start a business, but just don’t know what to do or how to get started. I particularly liked all the links to professional organizations for all the various careers, and the interviews with business owners were really interesting.

The information supplied in this book can serve anyone wishing to start their own business as a useful reference guide. It is obvious Shepherd writes from personal experience for she thinks of everything one needs to know before starting a home business.
The business planning section shows that a home business can be much more than just earning a few dollars, it can be a viable, long term income if you plan for it.
What I found most helpful were the sections on business selection and planning. There are simple checklists and questions to find out what type of business you are most suited to and likely to be successful at. It would be really helpful for someone feeling unsure about what type of home business would be best for them. Good resource.
