Running a small home business is in fact something that is extremely easy to do. If you apply a few simple rules and then start to follow a planned start up plan you will find yourself very busy in a short space of time.

For someone new to the idea of starting up a small business from the comfort of their own home the whole thing can seems a little scary. However it is just the unknown that is what scares you.

If you had all the facts of what you need to do to start up your business you will honestly find it easy.

Now with home decorating what you really need to do, and this is the hard part, is to decide exactly which type of decorator you want to be.

You see if you give yourself a general description your focus will be to bland and you will struggle to get the initial work.

Now if you chose an exact niche within the decorating field and targeted that you will be recognized as the specialist in that field much quicker. A good idea is to take on the part of decorating that other decorators are unwilling to do, say research related.

So to use this example you make yourself the authority to “go-to” about the newest fabric trends.

You build up a carefully catalogued display room showing the ages or popularity of the current trends in prints. Now you advertising would read – “do not get caught out buying dud fashion fabrics and out of date materials..” that way you will start to get a lot of visitors to your showroom that are sacred to make a mistake.

Then you simply sell them the curtaining or upholstery as required.

Another option would be to set yourself up as a “colorist”

Please be careful here, if you do this be very sure that you do know what a colorist is and all it entails. However once your are trusted with the correct choices that you choose for decorators and clients, you will become to go-to-person.

Far back in my past when I was doing extremely high end kitchens, I used to take a “colorist” along too my meetings with the customer. They loved it. It made them feel important, especially as all the jargon was being thrown around all the time. It made them feel like the high prices are justified. In truth they were justified by me simply supplying them with an extremely well designed and functional kitchen.

So get the correct plan in place from the very beginning. Good luck.

one thing that I would like to point out here is that being a top decorator requires a certain degree of “overconfidence” it is that ability to be totally convinced that your decisions are the correct ones.

It also needs a fair bit of EGO and cheek. The slightest bit of hesitation on your part will be picked up by the prospective client and you will struggle to get business.

Personally I always used the basic honesty method.

By telling your client everything in an upfront manner you will be believed for using that approach.
